“I went to my state’s pride parade today and felt very guilty. I’m still in the closet and I went under the alias of a “straight supporter,” at least to the people there who know me. As “closet-clutter,” do I even deserve to be at pride? Do you have to be out to be proud? Is it possible to be both terrified and proud of who you are? Thanks.”

Dannielle Says:

I love this question and also hate it bc it makes me really sad but also makes me really angry. It makes me angry bc FOR SOME REASON you feel like it’s ‘wrong’ to be ‘in the closet’ which it ISN’T. Also, it makes me feel sad bc everyone deserves to be at pride! Whether you’re in-the-closet, out-and-proud, straight-as-fuck, thinkin-about-trans, someones-gramma, it doesn’t matter you guys.

Don’t feel guilty, don’t ever feel guilty for not being out, regardless of the circumstances. You guys, coming out and being comfortable with you and who you wanna bone is a process and it won’t happen over night and EVEN IF IT DID, who gives a eff? Why does it matter to everyone else who you’re boning? You know?

You should try your best to be completely happy and excited to live your life and be yourself and go to PRIDE and hang out at gay bars and poop in toilets and go about your day WITHOUT being out-of-the-closet…. you have to let yourself figure your you out on your own time/terms and don’t let any thing/event/person tell you when/where/how you need to do it….does that make sense?

Kristin Says:

AMEN SISTER CHILD.

I don’t know why I needed to scream sister-child, but it is what happened and you all have to deal with it.

You know what else you all have to deal with? Anonymous going to pride and shakin’ her tail feather without being “out and proud.”  Pride does not mean ONE thing, you guys.  I know that, when we turn on the news and they are covering the gay pride parade, they show a bunch of clips of naked people with glitter and feathers dancing in the streets…and while that is AWESOME and I love GLITTER, that is one form of pride.

You being proud of who you are can mean that you you keep your sexual preferences to yourself and you read a bunch of books about Tallulah Bankhead and then you go with your three friends to eat brunch across the street from where the pride parade begins and you smile to yourself because you are so happy that all of these awesome people are coming out and dancing in their feathers.

You know what else?

You being proud of who you are can mean that you hate glitter and naked people, but you love running and you join a runner’s club and you feel great about yourself.

You being proud of you are can mean that you cook your mom an incredible dinner for her birthday and you even remember to bring vanilla ice cream to go along with the peach crumble.

(YUM PEACH CRUMBLE)

My point is.  Everyone and anyone should feel welcome and accepted at a pride event, always, no exceptions.  You (and everyone else) have no obligation whatsoever to be “out” to anyone, ever.  Your life is your life and it is one million percent possible to still be scared and figuring things out and, simultaneously, feel a deep love for other people around you who are accepting, kind, and…covered in glitter.
